19. Stöckerweg/Steckergraben
The path that leads to the “Sauerwiese” new development area in Schwanden is called “Stöckerweg” in the original cadastre, and has been popularly modified to “Steckerweg”. The land was used as grassland reclaimed from the forest. Most of the tall trees were removed, but the rootstocks (Middle High German „stoc”) remained and protruded from the pasturage and could be seen from a distance. The digging up of the rootstocks was tedious and, as long as it was only used as grassland, not essential. It was not until the last quarter of the 18th century that the rootstocks were removed and the meadows were turned into farmland.
